Painted Bunting | Passerina ciris | Conservation Status: Near Threatened | PABU

When I journey afield and cross paths with Painted Buntings I’m always thankful to the Great Spirit for the experience. The males certainly have some of the most spectacular and brilliant feathers of any species and their songs are delightful.

Due to their small finch like size and cautious nature they are very difficult to photograph well as even the smallest leaf provides refuge and shelter from the lens. Hopefully others will find inspiration by their beauty and journey afield to see one in nature.

Unfortunately since 1965 Painted Buntings have been on the decline and their conservation status is considered Near Threatened.· This is partly because males are trapped in Mexico by the caged bird trade.

Hopefully you’ll be fortunate to cross paths with one in your next nature walk. If so capture a shot for your life list and inspire your friends with it.
